Company History
HISTORY
Founded in 1875 by philanthropist Eliza Turner, CCWA is one of the oldest camping organizations in the United States. Turner and a group of like-minded women sought to take underprivileged city girls to the country for healthy respite from the summer's city heat. In CCWA’s early days, camper enrollment was restricted to female residents of Philadelphia. The girls initially visited operating farms owned by board members. They not only participated in recreational activities but also assisted with daily chores. Over time, registration was expanded beyond the city limits, recognizing that inability to access outdoor programs was not unique to city residents. When the organization began acquiring property in 1913 near Downingtown, girls and for the first time boys, arrived by train and walked to what was then known as Paradise Farm. Today, children attend both our Resident and Day Camp programs and come from all around the Delaware Valley region. Our Resident Campers are 10-15 years-old and have the opportunity to attend any of our six one-week sessions. Our Day Camp caters to children ages 5 - 15. The Children's Country Week Association (CCWA) is a private, non-profit, non-sectarian charitable organization that owns and operates Paradise Farm Camps. In addition to providing summer camp experiences, CCWA has expanded over time to provide environmental education and other specialized services for children and families. Today we serve a very wide diverse population that includes african-american, latino, asian, caucasian and other families.
