Description
Berkshire Trails Camp is seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Head Chef to lead our summer kitchen team. This role oversees all aspects of food service for approximately 200 campers and staff. The Head Chef is responsible for planning, preparing, and executing nutritious, well-balanced, and appealing meals in a high-energy camp environment.
The ideal candidate is organized, calm under pressure, and enjoys working as part of a close-knit community. This position plays a vital role in daily camp life and directly contributes to the health, happiness, and overall experience of our campers and staff.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and prepare daily meals and snacks for campers and staff (approximately 200 people)
- Lead, supervise, and support a kitchen team of 6–7 staff members
- Create balanced menus that accommodate dietary restrictions and allergies
- Oversee food ordering, inventory, storage, and budgeting
- Ensure all meals are prepared and served on schedule
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness, food safety, and kitchen organization
- Comply with all local and state health department regulations
- Foster a positive, respectful, and team-oriented kitchen environment
- Communicate effectively with camp leadership regarding food service needs
Requirements
- Previous experience as a Head Chef, Sous Chef, or Kitchen Manager (institutional or large-scale food service preferred)
- Experience cooking for large groups (100+ people)
- Strong leadership and staff management skills
- Knowledge of food safety, sanitation, and proper kitchen procedures
- Ability to plan menus and manage food costs and inventory
- Experience accommodating food allergies and special diets
- Ability to work long days in a fast-paced, high-energy environment
- Flexible, positive attitude and strong problem-solving skills
- Current food safety certification (or willingness to obtain before start date)
- Must be at least 21 years old
